The Museum of European Cultures with over 27,000 objects on display houses one of the world’s largest collections of European ethnographic studies and cultural history. Founded in 1982 The German Museum of Technology has a large collection of historical technical artefacts mainly on rail transport but also includes exhibition halls of maritime and aviation interest. Museum Island which lies on the Spree river has several internationally renowned museums that are now occupying all of the island's northern half.
